The Chicontepec fields (Aceite Terciario del Golfo) have the highest resource in place in Mexico with over 80 billion barrels. Development of the fields is challenging due to a tight reservoir, low drive and its heterogeneous nature. Pemex has attempted to incorporate external technology and know-how through the use of field laboratories and licensing rounds. These measures have had limited impact in production.
